Summer Rafting With Bouken Kazoku And Edventure

In Niseko, there are an endless number of adventures to be had! But as every mom and dad surely knows, it can be a lot harder to figure out what to do when you are travelling as a family. Without the kids, it is easy to say 'yes' to any activity that takes your fancy, but when your children are in the picture you have to stop and think a lot more. Is this something that my children can do? Is this something that my children will enjoy? Is this something that my children can do safely?

With this in mind, we have put together a number of places that can help you to take a lot of the guesswork out of the planning stage! There are a number of summer camps and day camp centres that run programs specifically for children and families with children! Here's a look at some of the places around the Niseko area that you and your children might enjoy this summer!

Day Camps

Bouken Kazoku

bouken

"Bouken Kazoku" means "adventure family" in Japanese and that is exactly what the Bouken Kazoku team are. Think of them as an extension of your family when you are here in Niseko! They offer a number of different activities that can be booked separately or as a package. Their activities range from fishing to sausage-making and from wood-chopping to edible wild plant picking! Their objective is to help both children and adults experience nature through a range of hands-on activities focusing on olden day family-based practices where everyone can help out and take on a responsibility.

Hokkaido International School - Niseko Campus runs four week-long summer school programs between July 24 and August 18. The dates fall in line with the Japanese summer vacation period as Japanese elementary students are also encouraged to participate in addition to the children of local foreign residents and travellers to the area. The summer school program runs throughout the morning and afternoon, with students finishing up their days as per standard schooling hours. Students can be enrolled in one week-long session or all four! Single day or partial session sign-ups can be accommodated, but must be booked in advance and will depend on availability.

The summer school curriculum is aimed to provide students with a unique study-abroad experience in addition to bringing students into direct contact with Niseko's abundant nature. The week-long courses are conducted entirely in English and are designed to encourage English communication for both native and non-native speakers.

EdVenture Niseko is a family-oriented week-long camp that runs throughout the months of June, July, and August each year. In the summer of 2016, we sat down and spoke to Tim King about the program and it is back again this year, too. The five day, four night camps offer a range of different activities and curriculum, while some families just stay for a week, others stay for two to get the full summer program! Everything from experiencing the outdoors to Japanese cultural exchanges take place over the course of each of the week-long camps and are a great way not only for children to learn new skills in a new environment, but for families to get a chance to work together and bond! This camp runs from morning until the evening, campers and their families come together over the course of the week sharing meals and experiences. Single day drop in is available, but prior reservation is required and based on availability.
