Torchlight skiing, is an unmissable events for New Year's Eve in Niseko. Celebrating its 43rd anniversary this year, the event is one of the biggest torchlight skiing events in Japan with approximately 150 people involved in the performance.

The first shrine visit of the year is known as hatsumode in Japanese and is an activity many locals will take part in. "Hatsumode" festivities are held at almost every shrine and temple across Japan during the first few days of the year, especially on the first day of January. New Year Sake Celebration

"Kagami-Biraki" or "Kagami-wari" is a Japanese tradition to celebrate the new year with sake. The ceremony, translating to "Opening the Mirror" will be held at a number of hotels in Niseko including Skye Niseko, Ki Niseko and AYA Niseko. For one of the first Kagami-wari ceremonies of the day, head towards King Bell Hut at 10:00 am on 1 January.
