Celebrate The New Year With Torchlight Skiing

A unique way to celebrate the end of a year and the beginning of an exciting new one.

How are you celebrating the New Year? What better way to bring in the New Year with your friends and family by watching or joining in the action of the 41st Torchlight Skiing in Niseko in celebration of the New Year. Torchlight skiing, which started at Grand Hirafu with only a handful of people, now proudly celebrates its 41st anniversary this year.

Each season, around 200 skiers and snowboarders join in the annual New Year’s event on the slopes of Niseko's Grand Hirafu, making it the biggest torchlight skiing event in Japan. All participants will receive a certificate of participation with lots of lucky draw prizes up for grabs on the night!

For those spectating, then you're in for a real treat when the mountain lights up with the torch skiers coming down the mountain at 12am on January 1st, 2017! Afterward, the New Year's fireworks will begin at 12.15am as a dazzling display in celebration of the New Year.

Torchlight skiing

The biggest torchlight skiing event in Japan is Niseko's New Year event.

Participation in the event is open to anyone who loves skiing or snowboarding, however, riders must meet the following conditions and be able to participate at the following times:

Schedule: 10pm on December 31, 2016 (Assemble) until 12.30am on January 1, 2017
Location: Niseko Grand Hirafu, lower part of Kokutai Course to Kogen Course
Skiers: Those who can make snowplough turns without using ski poles.
Snowboarders: Intermediate (or above) boarders who can turn and adjust their speed securely.

Participants must be adults who can follow rules; or children of the upper grades of elementary school or older, accompanied by a guardian. All participants must give their consent to the fact that any accidents that occur during the event will be the participant’s own responsibility.

Reception Period: December 29th-31st, 2016
Reception Hours: December 29: 12pm-5pm, December 30: 12pm-5pm, December 31: 10am-5pm
Participation Fee: 1,000 yen
